Both games have backflip and long jump. Galaxy 2 reuses the Galaxy 1's engine.

Both games are missing some moves from 64, such as midair dive and slide kick.

The 2D Mario games have a bad image of how they are "rehashes" and has no new content now, thanks to the New's games, when they brought too much stuff from the old games. Bringing back the kings, or any other old thing to mark its second or third appearence will only make it worse, and will make people think they are even more "rehashing" and that they are being lazy, instead realizing they are paying homages or making callbacks of the old 2D Mario games.

And apparently, Nintendo has already heard enough of theses complaints. Tezuka and Miyamoto both said the future 2D Mario games are not going to be part of New's series anymore.
