Played Paper Mario for the first time recently, easily one of the best games I've played in a long while, absolutely fantastic.

I found the difficulty to be well balanced. I was at the brink of death a lot of times, especially during some bosses, but almost always I'd end up winning with very low HP/MP left.
I've died a couple times, but not many.

I agree about the exp distribution, if you use points to use more badges, the game will become harder. Although you can still use some badges to add extra HP and MP, it's up to you which badges you're using at any given moment. The game has enough badges to collect and experiment, I don't think I've unlocked every badge, or used every one I got. Which is inviting for a second gameplay someday.

I also like how you can't really grind on this game. Weak enemies will give you no exp at all.
