It is a good alternative to Street Fighter 2. In the original Fatal Fury there were a couple stages that did not have the plane switching mechanic. All it was there to do was to show off the NeoGeo's fake scaling animations. There are only 1-2 moves that could be done from different planes which are not effective at all, opposed to having nearly the whole arsenal of moves at all times. There is no tactical reason for moving between or forcing your opponent onto other planes.

MotW is my favorite in the series. Which is why OP's statements don't ring true at all, when there are better in its own series which is not even the best in the genre.

I actually unironically like Shinkiro art. Had it been the WWF All-Stars Brawl Stick amazon.com were selling away at clearance of $30USD (I missed out) I would change that art.
