Sorry for not obscure and probably most obvious, but this one is still my favorite. I'll post some lesser known ones later.

>When you beat Yoshi's Island and you see the rest of the map, as a player you'd expect a different tileset
Yeah that's the thing, it's a big interconnected map.
Donut Plains is not the same as Yoshi's Island, it introduces new tilesets, backgrounds, enemies and powerups. Itintroduces both water levels and underground levels to the game, as well as the first star road.
Yeah, it's not supposed to be wildly different than YI because it's still connected to it. On 3, all worlds are like in completely different locations. It's one of the main differences betweel World and 3, neither is bad.
>though debatable, since it's technically Yoshi's Island 2 with a new foreground object)
Forest is mostly a puzzle world, I find cookie mountain or chocolate island to have more similarities to Yoshi's Island than Forest of Illusion.
But still, yeah, the game is not supposed to have wildly different themes, but rather build up on the same theme (dino land).
World still has all the trademark Mario levels, I'm just disappointed there wasn't more bridge levels, but Awesome is probably not only my favorite bridge level but maybe favorite Mario level of all time.
In terms of variations, I think it's pretty variated, they keep adding stuff until the very end, it never feels stale.
>Doesn't feel like you're making much progress and then the game suddenly ends.
Maybe that's your perception of it, but generally it's agreed that SMW feels like a pretty robust game content-wise. I think the only way to think the game "suddenly ends" is by using Star World as a warp to Bowser's castle, which would be unlikely on a first blind playthrough.

Nice opinion but he's talking about the first world of Super Mario World (aka Yoster Island in Japan)

Best Mario game?

Super Mario World is the best video game ever made.

In my opinion, yes, but Nintendo made too many good games and different people have different tastes, so a lot of people will have different favorites. To me, though, SMW is the definition of timeless classic, and best video game ever made.

also, inb4 smw vs smb3 (both are 10/10)

To be honest, the guy deserves an e-blowjob if he uploads it, he debinded the whole book to scan it in high definition page by page.

I was waiting for him to make a new thread but seeing how it's already 2 days past his deadline, I thought it'd be better if I let him know we're still waiting for it.

I had to downscale it a lot because 4chan has some arbitrary limit on the resolution. Maximum file size is 4MB, but when I tried to upload the original it simply said "too high resolution" or something.

>>2519445
I'm aware of that –that's why I work with huge files and save the JPGs only once, as the very final product. Every step in between is done with PSDs (which are lossless obviously).

In hindsight I could've gone for a TIFF-only approach but I'm sure my computer would've blown up.

If there's demand I can probably upload the original uncropped, un-rotated, straight-from-the-scanplate images, but I doubt anyone would want those. Except maybe if you really really want to see what a Japanese child scribbled to the pages decades ago.

Thanks for your patience. Here's another snippet to keep you waiting.
