Honestly just giving Chris 8 slots would have been enough. As I've said in my previous post, both characters in RE2 have 8 slots and that fixed the problem. 6 slots just isn't enough unless you've memorized the entire game. There's no way it won't be frustrating on your first playthrough. At least the PS1 version has the decency to tell you that Chris is hard mode. REmake doesn't tell you that and even worse, Chris is selected by default.

Personally, I'd start with the original release on the PS2. Then I'd play the Greatest Hits release to play the "Born from a Wish" campaign, again on the PS2.
"Born from a Wish" is a prequel to the main game. It was developed as an expansion to the original game to get people to double dip on the re-release of Silent Hill 2 on other platforms and later the PS2 Greatest Hits aforementioned. It's really short and not that big of a deal, but you should definitely play it AFTER you finish the main game.
I wouldn't play the main game using the Greatest Hits version of the game since they made a few minor changes that I'm not very fond of. For example, the attract video that plays automatically on the main menu of the game features voices from the scenes used in the video montage, completely ruining the masterful composition of "Theme of Laura" and actually spoiling some game events. In the original release, the video only has Maria's voiceover and the montage is completely silent, as it should be.
Do not play the Xbox or vanilla PC versions of the game, since these feature missing visual effects and multiple bugs. The same can be said of the Silent Hill HD Collection version of Silent Hill 2, this particular version was based on the PC port of the game, but moreover, it was based on an incomplete version of the PC port. Needless to say, it's not recommended.
If you don't have access to a PS2 or you just want something more convenient, playing the Silent Hill 2 Enhanced Edition on PC is a safe bet all around. This version is a passion project by fans which basically takes the PC port and makes it the best version of the game to play, with all the PS2 effects looking better than ever and a massive list of bug fixes, this is the version you want to play.
While I am the kind of person that would rather play the game on the console it was developed for and with the equipment it was developed for (i.e. PS2 on a CRT TV), I can't deny the fact the Enhanced Edition is

They weren't exactly Capcom who were smart enough to port their games to fucking everything. That said, even though apparently deleting the source code was said to be a common practice during the PS1 gen due to limited harddrive storage, they had far less of an excuse during the PS2 era.
And even if they did, they had even less of an excuse to rely on broken source code for the HD Collection instead of getting a semi-competent studio that could just reverse engineer the PS2 or Xbox versions. The fact that they had to spend their time fixing bugs that could turn Heather blue just says it all, they probably could've just ported 2/3's PC versions to GOG or just re-release them as Xbox/PS2 classics and called it a day.

It seems useful if you plan on using upscalers, but I don't know. Sometimes it feels like certain games feel like they're meant for composite and nothing higher, at least for games with pre-rendered backgrounds like Resident Evil.
