Both the N64 and the Sega Saturn have terrible libraries. I doubt any of you could name 6 games for each that are actually good. Compared to the SNES, they are both a terrible joke. That transition to 3D was hard on the industry.

>Retro gaming means ... computer games... on platforms launched in 1999 and earlier.

The implication seems to be that the game is *developed* for these specific platforms, not just that it runs on these platforms. Pier solar is allowed, and numerous other new-games-for-old-consoles are allowed because they are made by the developers to run specific hardware/software that is pre-2000. This is always going to be messy with computer games, but if a game is designed in order to run on hardware of the time then it seems fine. This is different than the game running on the hardware of the time just by coincidence, I'm sure I could back-port Axiom Verge to the Dreamcast and it would work fine, but that's disingenuous reading of the rules.

Ultimately, that's really what the spirit of the board is about; Retro gaming has a distinctive flair and flavor both because design philosophies were different at the time AND ALSO because the limitations of hardware/software forced innovative and creative problem solving on the part of developers. They couldn't just throw processing power at the problem and that's part of why retro gaming feels like such a distinct type of thing, so anchoring the titles that we can discuss to hardware seems like a fine compromise to make.

Sony executives. Sony executives are what went wrong.

shit didnt finish my post. anyways, if you were going for a different fell then why attatch it to a series that already establishes a special feel too it? while 1 and 2 were kind of grounded in reality and felt more like a sci-fi, 3 just goes full on fantasy and almost ditches the setting and feel the other two had. plus its so far removed from 2s general feel, yet so reliant on its story that its jarring to go from one to the other. hell, you could replace pokey with fucking gannon and it would be about the same.

>I know a lot of fans don't like its bigger emphasis on story and characters than its predecessors
i get that, but my point is that while it may have a bigger emphasis on those things, how they did it almost completely disregard how the other two set themselves up. also M1 and M2 are a prime example of doing more with less in those categories, and i think thats what contributes to how uniqe they are in regards to other JRPGs of the time and even today.
>3 has one of the most enjoyable battle systems of any JRPG
eh, got me there. although i preferred 2s battle system for some reason.
now, thats not to say 3 is a bad game by any means, i just dont think it goes well with the other two. it would really benefit of just being its own thing really.

Cheating is only bad in multiplayer games, because you're giving yourself an unfair advantage over the other players. There is no sensible reason to oppose people using cheats in their single player games.

That's the thing, you only liked this game because you happened to be coming of age at the same time that it was released. If you don't have rose tinted memories of playing it when you were a kid then it's far more obvious how mediocre it actually is
