1. Good system at a good price. It was a 3D polygon machine in 1994
2. Way stronger than the 3DO or Jaguar or 32x.
3. CD based system and Sony made Cds
4. Open policies meant 3rd parties could go nuts, and make T or M rated games without Nintendo's meddling or censorship.
5. Sega and Nintendo fell flat on their faces with the N64 and Saturn
6. Sony is HUGE and had a huge marketing budget and support system behind it.

It was a perfect storm.

Nintendo went full retard in Gen 5 and made a console that nobody outside of a handful of mutts in murica cared about, why would anyone want to stick with them? They got to make the games they actually wanted to make with Sony. They made their most popular and successful game of all time with Sony. Nintendo was holding them back.

>When people say FF7 was more impressive, what they are actually saying is "I like the presentation more". Which is really a mask for "I like movie-games more".
That's what Playstation always has been about, and the ads didn't even try to hide it.

Throughout the SNES life span anime and JRPGs popularity grew into a loyal but niche fan base with strong word of mouth and by 97 it was still growing, Square like most other publishers was fed up with Nintendo and going to cartridges was the last straw so they hooked up with Sony and Sony pushed VII hard with ads and made the title a showpiece for the system. FFVII's cutscenes and pre-rendered backgrounds look quaint now but when the game dropped they were groundbreaking to western fans and the story while poorly translated gripped western fans with the death of Aeris becoming a spoiler that was near impossible to avoid.
