Your monitor has a horizontal scanning rate which dictates how high a resolution+refresh rate it can do. This means lower resolutions can go to higher refresh rates or if you wanted you could do even higher resolutions at headache inducing refresh rates. If you have an Nvidia graphics card then you can create a custom resolution and see what the required horizontal rate would be, I circled it in this pic for you. Not sure how this works for AMD cards but you could use a calculator like the one I linked at the end along with custom resolution utility (CRU) to do the same thing. If you've got a decent monitor you should try out quake at something stupid like 200hz, it's fun af my dude.
