Friends, what's better: the PlayStation Phat, or the Slim, and why?

Curious to learn what they key differences are since there always seems to be something lost when it comes to console revisions, and I never learned how the two differ besides the obvious such as size and the disc loading method.

Why does it have so much audio compression? It's like they wanted to force you to use some shitty mono crt speaker with it

I want to mod my PS2 and I'm thinking of trying out Free McBoot. Does anyone have experience with it? It seems pretty simple to set up and use. I heard it's installed on the memory card, can said memory card still be used for saved games?

>Has none of the experimental feeling of it’s predecessor
>starts the dilution or brown&blooming of many series which peaked on its predecessor
>kickstarts the king and gradual decline of inspiration in game design

“Yeah but it had a DVD player” doesn’t save this console when looking back at its library sorry

Putting aside the official rules of this board; is the PS2 truly "retro" or no?

What's the best way to play the vast majority of PS1 and PS2 games on a single unit?

I've already got a spare slim PS2 and looked into the SD card solution, seems good for $80 AUD.

Anyone know how good this will run PS1 games and if it can handle multi disc stuff? Mainly basic bitch games like Tomb raider and resident evil, maybe a bit of FF7.

Is it true that the PS2 was the weakest console of its generation, with worse hardware than even the Dreamcast? I'm not an expert on old console hardware, so I genuinely don't know. I only know that the Xbox was the best, and the Gamecube was apparently the second strongest (but had disk size limitations).

At least the N64 understands basic symmetry. There's zero reason for the PS2 to look like two different sized boxes stacked together.

Anyone here still using a PS2 in Europe? Do you put up with the PAL version running slower or is there a workaround to get games running at full speed like with NTSC?

I bought a PS2 game. What are the chances my PS2 Slim doesn't work after years of non-use? I heard these things have garbage disc drives but do they only deteriorate with use?

Does the PS2 Slim have bad seating with discs?
>get San Andreas off Amazon brand new
>put game into PS2 Slim that I've played Persona 3 and Disgaea 2, along with PS1 games, on with no issues
>notice the disc takes a bit more effort to click into place than other games
>PS2 logo reads, systems sees it's a PS2 game, but screen stays black
>put same disc into fat PS2
>boots up and plays with no issue
I really don't want to have two PS2s hooked up just to play all my games.

I'd like anyone who has experience with this console to tell it to me straight - should I be playing on the actual hardware or can I just emulate with PCSX2?
The only display I have is my PC monitor (1920x1080) so I would have to convert it to HDMI somehow, I'm thinking a component cable to HDMI converter but I'm not sure.

I'm not emulating so don't ask
I've already decided to get a PSOne to play PS1 games.

Here's my options for PS2:
Late model PS2 Slim with component cables to Retrotink, it has a new old stock laser installed (never used)

Original hardware backwards compatible PS3 that still works great, runs whisper quiet, and was delidded with new thermal paste applied last year

I know it's terrifying using a PS3 because it could die at any moment but I am intrigued by using it's internal softening feature with a mcable for best video quality ps2 games.

Alternatively, the PS2 looks fantastic over retrotink

wtf do I do

Okay but this has to be the best console of all time if only because of its library, right? It literally has great games from every genre in existence.

Almost every game it has falls into one of two categories -
> 1. Games that have since been ported and now have a definitive version on PC and/or newer consoles
> 2. Stuff that aged really badly and you wouldn't want to play it nowadays anyway
The PS2 feels like a console that was picked clean by porting/remastering. The best games were all so successful that they were put on modern platforms, and what's left is just the garbage.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure this thing was amazing to own back around 2005 before everything was ported. But nowadays, the library of games where you'd still want to play the original version is smaller than the Gamecube. Am I missing something here? It seems like Silent Hill 2-4 is practically the only thing left since Konami lost the source code and we'll never have real ports.

So what's the best model of PS2? I've read a ton of conflicting reports.

Going to be using component cables and using the DVD-drive. Not doing any modding or anything so laser quality is important

So I dug out all of my own consoles and found all of my old PSX games, but the only thing I have to play them on is my old PS2. I've heard a lot of negative feedback about playing PS1 games on a PS2 so should I buy a new PS1 to get the best possible experience or is the PS2 good enough?
