Check out this SNES review from 1994. Even back then they ranked the SNES game lower than the Genesis game and made comments on how Dave Perry knew the Genesis hardware better.

Earthworm Jim SNES Magazine review from the same issue. Both pages are side by side too. They give the Genesis game a point higher, but the review for the SNES games starts out saying that Earthworm Jim is another Dave Perry platformer that was optimised for the Genesis. Also, one of the editors gives the genesis game a '7' with a 'meh, Dave Perry' comment. :
