I did at one point, especially when I just had the full ROM sets and all, I still do, but I keep them in their compressed folders I download them in, so I only extract the titles I'm sure I'll want to play, I think that one thing that really helps me is that I'm quite autistic, so not only do I mostly just go and replay stuff I already like, when I do try some new title, it's usually a franchise I already like.

I'll usually go "Where's my hyperfocus at right now?" and choose what to play based on that, I have around a dozen franchises that are my real favorites, so I got all of the ROMs for all of those.

One example is Sonic, and yes, the autistic anon is a Sonic fan, I know, the joke writes itself, still I do love the franchise, so I have all of the major titles downloaded, and try to finish all of those.

I guess my backlog is every title that looks alright for me that's from one of those dozen IPs I really like, it's a shame because I rarely try anything I haven't played before or grew up with, so I feel like I'm missing out on a lot, but then again if I had all of those possibilities I'd likely feel quite overwhelmed too, so maybe my autism is a sort of blessing in disguise for this specific scenario.

Yes, PS4 and XBOX One are not even close to the PS2, but then again Wii U isn't even close to N64 or Game Cube, so it evens out there.

Indeed, as I said I had problems with RetroArch myself, and it was mainly the controller settings, as it's not very good when your controller isn't recognized as an XBOX One controller though Xinput. It's especially bad for controllers with a 6-button layout that SEGA's more well known for in the industry. I got a 8BitDo M30 recently and it took some time to get it working how I wanted it to, and that was with Xinput, for some reason if I tried to plug the controller in, to get less delay than I get with Bluetooth, it recognized it as a completely different controller, and for some reason I couldn't set it up the same way as I did when it's connected through Bluetooth, but then again I don't know how much of this is due to the RetroArch software itself or 8BitDo's controller.

Also, even I get a bit overwhelmed by all of the submenus and settings sometimes, so I get why people might dislike, but that's because I like to tinker, which isn't really needed most of the time.

I've heard many bad things about the RetroArch developer before, and it does sound like I'd quite dislike him if I interacted with him and/or was an emulator developer too, but to me this really is a matter of separating the art from the artist, I've had to do it many times before, and it's ideal, or else we'd enjoy less things, because people suck, we all do to a certain extent, to be quite honest.

I never managed to play on a real GBC or GB/GB Pocket, but from footage I saw online, it always looked way better than the GBA one for me, I'm not sure if it's just the GBA one being darker, or the more detailed graphics making it harder to see on the same style of screen, anyways it does seem that the OG GBA had the worst screen that Nintendo has made, which is a real shame to me.

Don't gaslight people, I didn't live in a dark cave, nor did I only try to play my GBA in only a single place, i've mentioned before that I tried pretty much everything, and even in those few times I'd get the screen to look alright, it was a real pain to keep that position, I couldn't just lay on my bed and relax, nor play in the dark before going to sleep, it was downright uncomfortable, if you liked it then good for you, but you've admitted that it was both low power/ dark and reflective, which maybe is good for you, but for a lot of us it wasn't at all, and it's why many mod the OG GBA.

Of course there were less options back then, but the GBA SP came out only a couple of years later, the Game Boy Light came out a few years before, and other competitors came out in the early 90s with backlit screens, they could've given us a dim light for cheap and it would've been 10x better than nothing, and having a dark screen that's hard to see unless you're in the perfect spot.

I thought it'd be fun to start a discussion over the times when we really just got beat up by what we were playing, when we got "filtered" as many would say nowadays. I consider myself to be pretty average with this stuff, I have finished a few titles many consider to be really difficult, some of which I even find simple to complete nowadays due to how much I've had to play them so I could finally pull of a winning run, while there are other titles that people don't consider to be all that difficult and still were too tough for me, regardless if I actually went on to finish them or not. Anyways, it's time to leave our pride aside and open up about those times.

>How often do you feel that you get "filtered"?
>How would you rate your skill in video games overall?
>What were the titles that gave you the most trouble to complete?
>What were the titles that you gave up on due to it being way too much for you?

I find that this doesn't happen to me often, but I know that's biased because I often avoid stuff that looks like it'll give me too much trouble, like I've said I think I'm average, perhaps better in retro stuff than most, but nothing special either. I have memories of many titles, The Lion King was a pain to finish for the 1st time, 8-Bit Sonic 2 was tough to finish and then to 100%, Caslte of Illusion was surprisingly tough on Hard difficulty, Spider-Man (2000) was downright obnoxious to 100% due to a single suit which felt impossible to unlock, and speaking of Spider-Man... I can't beat 8-Bit Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin on Nightmare difficulty, it just can't be done.

I recall resenting the GBA for the longest time because I got the original one when I wanted the SP, and the screen was just absolutely awful, in some ways worse than its predecessors, even worse than cheap knockoff handhelds from that same time period, I despised it because the library was so good and I couldn't properly enjoy it.

Nowadays I emulate everything and feel even more resentful of all the good stuff I missed out on because of the original version being such a garbage handheld, how is it a portable if you need the most perfect conditions around it to see anything? It defeats the whole purpose of a portable being convenient and comfortable.

As someone who grew up with a PS1, PS2 and GBA, I can confirm that this really was the case.

All I see in this thread, especially in OP, is a lot of coping from Nintendo fans. I'd get the comparasion if there was a way to play Game Boy stuff on N64, like on SNES and Game Cube... but there wasn't, and many kids owned a PS1 and a GB/GBC, because a lot of kids wanted both a home console and a handheld... the handheld generation is something Nintendo was winning comfortably, as they always did, while in the home console department it was PlayStation, because it was better than its direct competitor, which was the N64, not the Game Boy or N64 + GB/GBC, it had more good titles in most genres and much better 3rd party support overall.

N64 was excellent, it really was, but PS1 won fair and square, it's been over 20 years, just let go...

How do you go about completing the video games you play? Do you always stop when the credits roll or are you one of those that loves to collect everything? Are your own preferences regarding this always the same or do they vary depending on how much you've enjoyed the experience up until that point? Do you dedicate completion only for a few selected titles or do you go for it more often than not? I feel that it'd be interesting to see everyone's approaches to this sort of thing, as it's something that kept getting more and more common with each passing console generation, and nowadays it's everywhere, with things like trophies and achievements being quite common to see.

Have you ever deliberately gone for a 100% run before?
What 100% completion are you the most happy with getting?
What was the most difficult 100% you've ever gotten?
Did you ever give up because you couldn't pull it off?

When it comes to this last question, there's another thing that's on my mind... did you ever get 99% completion in something, as in there's only a single thing missing for it to be 100% completed, but you couldn't do that last thing? Wheter it's an item you couldn't find, or a mission you couldn't beat, or a bug within the code that never got properly fixed, etc. If you've ever faced this situation before, either a single time or more, what was your approach? Did you try to force it as much as possible even if it stopped being enjoyable or did you move on from it in a positive way? I usually manage to pull it off, but I won't lie that there have been a few cases in which I couldn't manage it at all.

I do want a challenge, and that's exactly why I can't stand being sent back to the title screen, all it does is that it forces me to replay earlier parts which I've already mastered, so I play all of the earlier levels just for a chance to play the part I'm stuck at again, it just feels like padding, when I lose, I want another shot at that part that gave me trouble, and while I don't think it's a bad thing to take me back to the start of the level, I actually find it quite fair, taking me all of the way back is just too much.
