There's a video of Adam Koralik visiting a UK retro games shop and being stunned by the sheer number of European SMS games. Third party support thrived in Europe. The SMS even got ports of Amiga games such as Populous and Speedball.

The SMS used the Z80 processor, the same as the Spectrum, which British programmers were very familiar with.
The result of this was some pretty damn amazing games.

The SMS has a ton of great games, and some hugely underrated gems such as Penguin Land.

The SMS versions of Choplifter, California Games, Penguin Land, Spy Vs Spy, R-Type, Ultima IV, Ys, Ninja Gaiden, Shanghai, Rampage, Gauntlet, Populous, Speedball, PacMania, Impossible Mission, Golden Axe are all superb and in many cases the definitive versions.
