I can explain how these kind of bridges work. By default untextured platforms display the floor bleeding over the walls, but if the floor is too high to see then it's just invisible. Idk why it's aashitty because it could just be nothing. The middle texture is all you're can see from the sides.
It makes for a very convincing bridge, but only at that height, or directly above it. If you die near it you can see the illusion is broken. The benefit of self referencing sector bridges is that they work from all angles.
These ones also cause graphical glitches in glboom specifically which is why I'm a bit surprised btsx used them.
