If you only play jrpgs that stick close to the standard Dragon Quest formula, then you won't get the appeal. You have to get into jrpgs with unique battle systems. Games like pic related, Vagrant Story and Chrono Cross are good examples.
The appeal for me personally are the osts and environments of each game, particularly if they are in a tropical setting.
