i'm working on understanding the cutscenes now, but while i'm doing that, other anons can figure out where maria's sprite tiles are used. this information will be needed to make sure all the modified sprites fit with each other. to that end, i've made this modification which replaces all of maria's sprites with numbered boxes. that patch is here:

apply to the .bin file. pic related is a table showing all of the sprite tiles with numbers to keep track of them. the first tile is 00, the last is D5. it's kind of hard to play the game with the modified tiles, but what i think would be useful is documentation of where the tiles appear in-game. so, the tiles used for each of maria's unique frames should be recorded. every possible state should be inspected: running, hurt, jumping, double jumping, etc. mostly this is to see how tiles are combined and where tiles are re-used.
