You're not wrong OP. However it was a generation's first taste of paper-thin subtext which gave them the novelty of feeling like they were using their runny brains. As such, the non-existent gameplay and challenge was granted a pass outside of Japan. It was also massively overhyped by PS2's press and fans due to them losing RE to Nintendo.

The actual gameplay, level design and challenge is straight up garbage, but nobody ever talks about that because it was babby's first subtext simulator.

SH1 was genuinely good all-round, though.
