Besides the graphical issues, it's also got much longer loading times and lags a lot harder. The extra stuff it adds isn't really worth how much worse it performs and looks compared to the other versions of the game.

I've heard good things about their Vandal Hearts port to Saturn, but haven't played it myself.

Also, the lead designer of Dracula X for SNES would go on to direct Castlevania Legends and the crappy Gameboy Goemon at Nagoya, which makes sense, DX feels a lot sloppier designed in general than Rondo of Blood.

>didn't enjoy XX which is more NES-like in design than Rondo
>thinks BR is better than any of the non-handheld entries
Nah, he's right, you're the mong here.
HC does deserve its own tier for how shitty it is, though.

Remember when people thought Dracula X was a port of "the japan-only holy grail best castlevania EVAR!!!" Rondo of Blood?
Glad those ignorance times are over now that everyone can actually play Rondo.
Also the guy who did these Dracula X artworks (the same guy who did art for Front Mission 3) is a genius, I wish the game actually used his designs in-game.

I like Vampire's Kiss more than Super Castlevania Bros. At least it plays and works like an actual Castlevania game.

I liked both Rondo and Drac X.
I think I like Rondo a little bit better because it has more secrets, but I like the art in Dracula X by Terada better than the moe animu designs of Rondo.

I like the silly Rondo animu designs as much as the next guy, but make no mistake, Yamada's art is superior.

I'm also a big Dracula X fan. Not my favorite, but it's up there. It was my first Castlevania game as a kid, and I think it was a great introduction to the series. As you say, it's a lot like the original game, and more challenging than Rondo of Blood, which I also played later and loved. But upon playing Rondo of Blood, the original PC Engine game, I realized people were lying when they said Dracula X was a "washed up" port or whatever, because the game was completely different save for a few locations like the first level (still completely different in design), different bosses, etc. They're 2 different games.
By the way, Dracula X does have some alternate paths, and you can still rescue Maria and the maidens, but you can't play as Maria.

I haven't played X in a while, but I seem to remember you can't control air direction mid jump in Dracula X, like in the old CV titles, but you can in Rondo. Overall Richter in Dracula X feels a lot more like Simon, he's swifter in Rondo of Blood. The design is also totally different from Rondo of Blood. I remember levels 1 and 2 being pretty hard, dying a lot. Rondo's first 2 levels are pretty easy. It gets a bit harder on stage 3 of Rondo, but Dracula X gets even harder. The only stage I find as challenging as anything on Dracula X in Rondo is stage 5b.
