>Reviewers hail it as one of the greatest RPG's from the 32bit generation
> SOA makes a short print run and advertises that the game will be hard to find
> Pay stupid Ebay prices for a hard to find copy.

Also the claim that the source code was lost due to a harddrive crash, which also lost the source code for Magic Knight Rayearth. I'm not saying the game doesn't deserve its' praise. But couldn't Sega at least re-release this one on an emulator? This and Shining Force III? And Shining in the Darkness.

>irrc they actually had to produce more since it sold out so quickly. The first run games had white or black cd sleeves.
>t. had a Saturn with PDS and use to know stuff but my memory is foggy

So that's why there are two different variations of the game box. Never knew that.

>Owning a Saturn in 1998 must of been like owing a Wii U in 2016, a truly soul crushing experience.

Truly quote worthy. I owned a Saturn and did not own a PS1. I enjoyed my Sega Saturn for what games it had, Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally, Guardian Heroes, Virtua Cop, Fighters Megamix, NiGHTS, Shinobi Legions, Manx TT, Panzer Dragoon 1 and, 2 even Daytona USA and a hand full of other games. But in North America, the system launched in 1995 and was discontinued in 1998 and was pretty crushing.

Image related is a real magazine print ad that Sega of America ran in 1998. "For those who can't find Panzer Dragoon Saga, see below". The game was printed in such low numbers, that Sega even made fun of it in their advertisements for the game. Now it's a rare and expensive Saturn game.

Even more crushing when you discover the Japanese library that never made it to the US.

I don't know how much you've played so far but once you get a few locations open and comfortable with the navigation there's this feeling of amazing depth that's just profoundly undeveloped. Superficially the barren emptiness is supposed to be taken as part of the "ruined" setting but by the time you get to the endgame you'll find yourself searching for more content to experience, seeing so many places it could be but realizing that Sega just plain didn't have the resources to develop.

Their arcade games were so good at the time because Sega was absolutely brilliant at game concepts and arcade games don't need to be especially fleshed out.

Then there's a whole additional level of it that you can see with a little context. Take a look at this US ad. Sega of Japan gave Sega of America an advertising budget for a game they shipped so few actual copies of it was already sold out everywhere before the ad even was designed so this is what SoA ran. It's hard to deny the tensions between the two and if the company when you look at something like this.

Popularity is just as important of a factor than actual rarity. Radiant Silvergun is a pretty common game, but has been very expensive since the late 90s. If you want to see a truly rare Saturn game, look at Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru which had a small print run by a company that shortly went out of business. PDS on the other hand is a game where the print run clearly undershot the actual demand, which is pretty clear when it had ads like this.

If you want to see how print run sizes correlate with eBay prices, check out some of the rarer Neo Geo MVS games where you can check the serial numbers on the cartridges. Metal Slug 5 only had a 5k print run with no Japanese cart equivalent yet it's a $200 game.

>Hey guys, we here at SoA know that you already bought up every single retail copy of PDS that SoJ pressed or soon will but SoJ still gave us a pretty big advertising budget so.... here's this, we guess. Sorry.

Best ad ever

Instead of pressing more copies SoJ gives SoA a huge advertising budget to push a game that was already sold out

This. The combat system is definitely the best thing about it. It's wholly unique and the way it felt similar to flight-mode was sweet. Walking around off your dragon was weird and definitely felt like it could have been more developed. I guess Panzer Dragoon world is kind of barren though. I never did and still haven't played all the way through any of the rail shooter games so some people may get a bigger kick out of the story although I still enjoyed the story a lot but I also did a lot of acid in 1998.

You're thinking of Earthbound. Panzer Dragoon Saga sold out everywhere immediately. The problem was that SoJ only pressed 10,000 copies of it. It could have sold ten times as many.
