As opposed to what? PCs? the N64 was more powerful than desktop PCs at release, up until the first 3dfx cards came out. There's a reason why even PC magazines at the time praised the N64.

Maybe if you grew up during the 6th gen, then I can understand you thinking N64 (and PS1, and Saturn) had "shit-tier" picture. In fact yeah, 5th gen in general doesn't look very good, but at least n64 has some of the best looking games of that gen, like Sin and Punishment.
