It's a chance to right the past. Since I couldn't afford it, I had no choice but the poverty AMD option. At the time a HD7850, no matter how lowly the settings, was always a stuttering experience that it made me quit video games. Gaming was for the Linux snobs with Intel and nVidia, but since then the parts were cleared out for newer Intel+nVidia and Windows 7 is still a great OS for me. It is a chance to rekindle the joy that was robbed from me by AMD.

In part it is a bit of nostalgia, but they are still enjoyable games that I have fortunately kept from those days. I mostly play them because I could not afford the newest stuff. Modern games lack a good price that fits my limited budget. The modern systems are too expensive and the games prices are high as well pricing me out. They tend to disguise the price like "free to stream" but my neighbor's internet is not that strong to support that much data being used and the price of the supporting services are not going down. Would love to play modern games as well as retro games, but wages just have not kept up.

The magazines were significantly more expensive than console magazines. I remember contacting a few of my favorite publishers that advertised for demos. Psygnosis actually remembered me and had really cool Christmas themed Lemmings demos. I remember ads for Falcon computers which looked really cool, but I realized I could just get the same parts and pay half as much, but without the cool computer case.

I think you may be onto something. I would like to enjoy new games, but I am only able to afford stuff from clearance racks. My computers are typically behind the times and I have to resort to AMD poverty which is only good with old stuff.

However, I am more interested in how I can stop being poor. The most I ever won is $1 back for a $2 ticket from the lottery.

I like them because they are fun, enjoyable, and as interesting to me now as they were when I remembered first playing them. I mostly play them because, it is what I already have and I cannot afford the new coolest stuff. I think games can have their own charm in both modern and retro. The difficulty/challenge is a non-factor as well since different games have different aims to their play mechanics. Play time is also a non-factor as that too is irrelevant to the release time and also game dependent. I still play games I already beaten.

Is there a way to tell directly from the site? I sort of missed out on the 95-98 times of games and went straight to 2000. That's why I wanted to build a dedicated 98 machine.

I will look into it. You said the magic words "Star Control 2" which is one of my most favorite games. Someone on this board directed me to this Russian abandonware site filled with Russian, Korean, and Chinese DOS games that I have not heard of and look amazing. So the oddities interest me greatly. As for the Audigy2, I hope this will work:

I was hoping the DRM free approach means it would be a convenient way for me to transfer the games to my older time machine builds that are not online. Fortunately, I have a Diablo 1 disc that was included in the Diablo Battle Chest, and I could install from there, but I think I would be missing out on more recent patches which the GOG release may have. I am more concerned with titles such as Grim Fandango, where I (on a quick inspection of the website) can only find the remastered, but not the original.

I know how it is. I want an Xbox One X to join my friends playing games or a Playstation 4 for the VR games but could not afford anything of the modern gaming. I am fortunate to have kept the stuff I did get from the clearance bins. Don't knock laptop stuff, as I recently got a dual-core machine that I am hoping to run some great old stuff. Star Control 2 was one of my most favorite games back then, and I hope Ur-Quan Masters will work. I also plan on installing Streets of Rage Remix and AM2R, any other free games I should be looking out for?

That is the case, but at least the games are fun too.

I still want the system for The Apprentice, Tetris, Pac-Panic, Mutant Rampage, Alien Gate, Hotel Mario, the Kingdom games, Mega Maze, and the Zelda games you mentioned. I remember trying it out with a really cool large trackball controller. For ammo, no the Xbox One X does have way more games I want for it than the CD-i, but I still want both systems. The Xbox One X moreso because that's where my friends are at and it plays a lot of great games. I just wish I can afford to play either though.

Due to a firing and someone leaving, I get to work 5 days a week now, so my next paycheck in two weeks I will have $100 more dollars to play with. I was thinking of adding onto what I already have in >>4640714 and getting one of those 500GB hybrid hard drives with a SATA to IDE converter. However, I think Windows98SE is limited to 128GB HDDs, so would partitioning that 500GB drive into 4 120GB partitions work or should it just be limited in Seatools to a single 120GB drive for it to work properly?

I am unsure if the owner can staff up in time for the foreseeable future, so maybe in another two weeks I can get a power source and case (and cables). Soon to attempt the JWin98SE build. Here's hoping.

Yep, I am probably older than everyone here.

Back then it was a great way to play with friends, as we all shared/copied whatever we got from purchases or downloads from usenet. You'd get to show off and introduce games to your friends and classmates. Sometimes the pirate group would show off their technical abilities not just with a crack to remove copy protection, but also show off some cool music and graphical effects in a small additional file. Now digital distribution with torrents and our broadband connections simplify the whole acquisition process. There's plenty of online reviews and trailers these days to overtake trying random games friends recommends or magazine recommendations.

Going to a friend's place that has a few computers and/or bringing one of your own (with one bitch computer as the sole purpose of server) for an enjoyable LAN party gathering everyone for some local RTS, FPS, and RPG gaming powered us through great weekends. The gatherings were parties in themselves were chill times with movies/music in the background while making plans for food and drinks was a shared experience. Now we can continue to play at our own schedules at anytime with friends or strangers regardless of distance.

It was nice knowing more about computers than the educators in the field, setting up massive networks of locally connected computers. Experiments like playing tabletop RPGs over a T3 line with others were very cool. Hiding a repository of games and viruses across different places from all around the country which no admin can track down was a thrill in itself. Now, it is less of a wild west, but very structured and organized.

Things are better now with a large variety of games to play as there weren't as much when building from scratch, so now you can enjoy the old games and the new ones. Broadband and the advances in computing has enabled us to enjoy gaming in more ways. I think it is as fun then as now, if I had the money.

1994 was a pretty good year for me. In fact, all of the 90s were pretty good to me. I guess every year builds upon the previous ones, get more and more good stuff.

I still disagree with these though even in their day. First magazine I bought in a long time, and I will say it is a strange feeling being frozen in time to see how things have changed. Life is Strange at #64 beating out #65 Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines and then when I see that my Command & Conquer Red Alert is still remembered as pretty good at #40, I see #39 is Her Story. I do not have the money to build or get a good computer to try out all these new classics, I wish I did because my friends are all enjoying #24 Overwatch and I am stuck enjoying my old games.

I remember getting the demo which came with PC Gamer Magazine, I played the fuck out of it. Think it would run well on my 486DX4, or should I just dosbox it until I can get a Pentium 3? Is there a CD-ROM or enhanced/definitive version?
