Have you tried to do 100% runs of any episode?
I watched this video in its entirety, mainly because I played Duke in DOS as a kid https://youtu.be/4rSGPiNqbg0
and instead of just copying the run, I opted to continue where he left off and do episode 2 100%. I got all the way to the final boss one run, but choked hard, and died by getting stepped on while running straight for the secret in the final boss room. Haven't tried any runs in years, I forgot some of the secrets by now. Fav level is pic related, this was PHENOMENAL in 1996, unforgettable

E1 is actually the weakest for me. The big vast canyon settings in the levels after E1L2 look barren, especially compared to say E3 or E4. E2 is my favorite but I know I'm in the minority on that. Maybe the levels flow better because they didn't have to try to recreate buildings and streets, they could just focus more on level design in a made up space base. Maybe I just like the setting and things like this window reveal in pic related blew me away as a kid and I still have nostalgia for how new and exciting this was.

>Lunar Apocalypse is a refined taste
Based. I used to hate the sentries and drones but you can 2-shot them with a shotty, though admittedly 3-shot is more common. Also doors

I find it highly re-playable. Try to beat the three-minute par time, for example; you'll be grinding a while, but it's fun. I'm not sure how they got three minutes, let alone one minute for the 3D Realms time. I'll watch a video on it eventually but I wanna throw some more blind attempts at it first. I think they run past all the monsters, and I don't think you need to actually press all the switches. I wonder if the par time is on easy or hard as well.

I find the level especially intense during attempts of doing deathless runs of episode two.

>I enjoyed Episode 2 greatly from start to finish
Episode 2 is currently my favorite Duke episode, but I haven't played e3 or e4 as much yet so it may change. I learned how to do deathless runs of episodes 1 and 2, so I spent a bunch of time on those. I haven't started on e3 deathless runs yet because it takes so much time to learn a new long run like that
> I never had a problem with any levels in DOOM 2 for example and was shocked to find so much hate for them online
I just get lost in them and get bored. Finding your starting weapons and ammo can be harder than the combat. Like in Downtown and The Chasm, I found myself lost and running out of ammo. Contrast that to say map03 of skillsaw's Lunatic.wad, which is a large spaceport/moonbase level but the map author conveys very well how to progress, and the hard part is not dying.

I read here that Duke Nukem 3D's episode two is the weakest of the four. I also didn't remember it fondly from playing it a long time ago, both in the 90's and maybe 10 years ago on an Xbox console port, except for a few sections like looking out the windows into outer space. I even relatively recently replayed episodes one, three, and four first, and put off playing E2 for months, but I'm pistol-starting no-saves all the episode 2 maps on Come Get Some, and it's actually incredibly strong. I think it might be one of my favorites, but I'd have to replay them all to give a definitive answer. One of the reasons it's so good is the amazing Bobby Prince music. I'm playing on EDuke32 with the digital music packs

I think I used to hate it because of the enforcers and sentry drones, but I've gotten a lot better by doing pistol-start no-saves UV-Max runs of Doom levels and episodes, and enforcers and sentries both can be two-shotted by the shotgun, and you can even kill sentry drones easily by alerting them and standing behind a closed door. The game's also just way funner with pistol starts and no saves. Anyway, thanks for reading my blog. What are some good Duke custom maps?
