The 1 on 1 battle missions are very similar to the Ultraman game on SNES (also released by bandai), where you try to increase a power bar (synch ratio in the case of Eva) to perform powerful attacks.
In Eva 64, you first need to break the angel's AT Field. Breaking the AT Field requires some buttonmashing, that needs to be well timed, not mindless mashing. Once the AT Field is gone, you can start actually damaging the angel.
Look up some FAQ online, there's guides on how all the controls work.
The gameplay is actually nothing special, since it tries to go for a realistic giant battle melee, it's very slow, but the fun comes from unlocking all the different attack animations. There's many to unlock, and you need to git gud because raising your synch ratio means not ever getting hit.

Yeah, it's not a complex game when you know how the system works.
It's actually like a spiritual successor to the SNES Ultraman game (at least the battle missions)

Are there any other giant monster battle simulation games besides Evangelion, Ultraman and Super Godzilla?
