I don't think there's any way of knowing this, but I BET this was going to be undone in the ending via time travel. It just seems really odd that they'd give Kyte this arc about becoming the new queen when Tricky doesn't have a similar experience with King EarthWalker. I think the partners were both supposed to grow up during the course of the adventure but not be ready to succeed their parents. Of course, I could be totally off the mark here.
