the overall financial cost to developers with cartridges was also astronomical in comparison to CD, and a large part of that was nintendo's greed. just look at the absurd $19 nintendo tax that third parties had to pay PER CARTRIDGE for "licensing."
nintendo could get away with this bullshit when their only real competition was the perpetually-dysfunctional sega and CDs had not been widely adopted yet. as soon as sony arrived with their trusted brand, stable platform, cheaper media, and fairer deal for third parties, it was all over for nintendo's business model at the time.

I wonder if Nintendo was using load times as a smokescreen to cover the fact that they were saving $50 on manufacturing per console while selling it for the same price of their competitors.

Yeah, evidently Nintendo was still charging $19 in 1997, but I don't know if that's 100% accurate or if it depended on publisher. For what it's worth, $4 royalty fees are too low or you end up with a $700 console. Sony hit that sweet spot where they could sell their console at a slight loss and still make enough back through first and third party software.

>I can only assume they just wanted a high clock speed at a cheap price
That's my take on what Nintendo did as well. We obviously benefit from hindsight, but decisions such as forgoing a CD drive or using a cheap, but high latency RAM solution resulted in a lower manufacturing cost, but was it necessarily worth it when it meant giving up dominance in what is now the largest grossing multimedia industry? Kudos to Sony, though. They produced an incredibly elegant system and they deserved the success that it brought them over the years.

>I still not get why Nintendo was so stubborn and not realizing that their NES-style console manufacturing stopped working when the Playstation arrived.
it was pure, shortsighted greed on nintendo's part. they didn't want to give up all the control they had over manufacturing or the bloated royalty fees they could charge.

I hope with these leaks that we will learn more about the royalty policy. It seems that Iwata had made efforts to lower the royalties on NGC

sticking with cartridges had nothing to do with loading times, that was an excuse (just like piracy was an excuse). the real reason they stuck with cartridges was so nintendo could keep their control over manufacturing and their absurd royalty fees.

they weren't scared of CDs. they just didn't want to give up cartridges. they wanted to keep the status quo where they had full control over manufacturing and could charge outrageous royalty fees.

>Nintendo stuck with cartridges because they forced developers to focus on gameplay rather than FMVs
no, nintendo stuck with cartridges so they could keep charging a $19 nintendo tax on each one and controlling the means of production. only nintensharts truly believe otherwise.

>there was also technical reasons they went for carts over CDs as i also mentioned.
there really weren't. piracy and load times were convenient excuses. the actual reason they stuck with cartridges is so they could keep collecting that $19 nintendo tax on each cart. it was a financial decision, not a technical decision.
>There's also reasons to do with violent content as you allude to. Nintendo see themselves as a family company with a responsibility to not expose kids to adult content
good for them, but third parties were tired of having to sacrifice their creative vision in order to help nintendo maintain their undeserved image as "the good guys."
>What is your explanation for it, then?
nintendo had grown accustomed to a greedy business model that made them a lot of money when there wasn't any serious competition. they failed to adapt to a changing market, and they were left behind in the dust as soon as another company offered a better, fairer and more stable alternative.

i'll gladly take loading screens over more expensive games and less games/genres to choose from. the n64's library was garbage because of nintendo's greed.

only delusional bingtendies would argue that paying more for games and having less genres to choose from is "better for the consumer."

sony crushed nintendo because of pic related. it was so much less expensive to publish a game on the ps1 than the n64. because nintendo stuck with cartridges, they couldn't compete with sony's fairer licensing deals.
sony crushed sega for two reasons. firstly, they offered a stable platform, in contrast to how sega was juggling the genesis, sega cd, 32x and saturn. the second reason was price. when steve race got up on stage at e3 and said "$299," that was it for the saturn (and really, sega as a console manufacturer).
