There are really only 3 genuinely hard parts in the game and one of them >>10538120 has a hidden passage nearby that lets you bypass it. The open ocean level is lame, but it's also piss easy and it doesn't take five minutes, you can easily clear it in less than one minute.

The Machine sucks beca it's basically impossible on your first try and is really just learning which path to take by which point it's nothing more than an annoying waste of time. The one part of that game I don't like.

I feel like we live on different planets. I'm mid 40's and have been playing games much of my life, almost all my friends abd coworkers play something even if some it's just phone games now. My wife plays games, I don't have kids but my nephews and nieces all play games as do my friend's kids. Hell even my mom plays games.

Also outside of this board I almost never hear the sort of condemnation for modern gaming that's common here. I still love many old games hence why I come here, but I also think modern gaming is fantastic and even this is another golden era in a way. Games and gamers are fucking everywhere now it's awesome.

The games were unique and moving in a different direction than its competitors. Sega has always had a more serious/goofy style of game that was meant to appeal to older crowds. Compared to Nintendo’s adolescent humor with a hint of serious or Sony/Xbox with there made for mature audiences approach. If you look at games like toe jam and earl, phantasy Star, Ecco the Dolphin, eternal champions, sonic spin ball, genesis shadow run, panzer dragoon saga, virtua fighter, virtual on, nights, etc... by the time the Dreamcast came out Sega had sculpted a niche in game design. Not to mention their arcade prowess. I feel light playing Dreamcast games is like having games from some alternate reality. It’s a treat to play and i never had one until I was older. Dreamcast games just have that Sega patina that you can’t find anywhere else.

I'm fine with all that. Fighting games are big enough now that even semi niche ones get a big enough player base to make it interesting. A lot of modern games might seem boring for one reason or another, but to me that's no different from earlier eras. I never really cared what the majority were doing so long as I found games I wanted. And even with my weirdo tastes I've always felt like there's more on my plate than I have time for.

And just to say, I do get a little the appeal of perfecting something through replaying. I literally couldn't tell you how many times I've played through the Ecco games (mostly the first) just because I enjoy how it plays so much. But that's really more like playing in a sandbox that happens to have levels than perfecting anything.

Yowza that's an odd list missing a bunch of pretty major stuff.

No Beyond Oasis (huge omission)
No Ecco the Dolphin 1 or 2 (really??)
No Herzog Zwei (are you kidding me?)
No Ranger X (holy shit)
Alien Storm but not Gunstar Heroes (just weird choice)
No Puyo Puyo
No Gaiares
No Space Harrier
No Outrun
No Toejam and Earl
No Alisa Dragoon
No Crusader of Centy
No Monster World of any kind
None of the Disney games like Castle of Illusion
No Galaxy Force
No Granada
No M.U.S.H.A.
No Lost Vikings
No Valis
No Weaponlord
No Truxton
No fucking Strider (what the hell kind of list is that? Or is Spider a misprint?)

There's a bunch of good stuff on there, but some real filler junk and a ton of really glaring omissions. Not that I'd buy one either way, but that's a super odd list of games.

I would never call Doom a bad looking game, but purely graphically Myst blows it out of the water and a bunch of it's contemporary and earlier games also looked better.

Doom is still fucking awesome though and looked amazing when it came out. OP is retarded.

Many people find this terrifying, but to me it's pure comfort. I could splash around in the ocean all day.

Also,
Legend of the River King
Animal Crossing
Outrun
and not retro, but big time Monster Hunter.

Tomb Raider 1 remains one of my favorite games ever made. A rarity where the original game outshines almost all others.

>>3877895
A classic of action and fun. I'm one of those weirdos who prefers the sequel, but CV was incredible.

>>3877925
Thumbs up to people who want to play virtual skateboards. The series has fans so that's great.

>>3877989
Tactics, Ys and PSIV are all brilliant. Issues with Planescape, but whatever. Ambition can't be overlooked. Suikoden 2 was translated by 2 of my favorite people even if I don't like the game.

>>3604209
>FAKE retro, like the worst generations who come on here with their shitty tastes and buy overpriced games to """"""relive""""""" a generation that was never theirs and come on /vr/ with a /v/ tab open to shit it up here with their bitter no gf shitty attitude bullshit from having a shitty era of shitty entertainment. They will never part of the retro game era, so they are PSEUDO RETROACTIVELY trying to be a part of it with emulators or worse, being part of the reason for the price hikes

There is no such thing as "fake retro" like you are describing. It sounds like you're upset that people younger than you also have an interest in these games, and I think that's an incredibly selfish and childish attitude to have. I love it when young people think old games are cool.

>Money still goes into Nintendo's pocket. Also, the 3D is a bad gimmick.

Money goes both to Nintendo and M2, who did an amazing job on the ports. The 3D is only a bad gimmick if you don't like it. I think it gives the games an amazing new look, and it's become the only way I play some of my old favorites now. Ecco looks weird not in 3D to me at this point.

>What world do you live in where this is a valid opinion?

Well opinions are subjective to start with, but I've always played a lot more Genesis than SNES and never thought Sonic was very good. But that's beside the point, you're the one complaining about the games you had, not me. I'm just saying there are plenty of games on the system you can't just breeze through.

Once you know what to do it's actually not that bad (I still find Asterite more of a pain), which is why I was surprised I couldn't find anyone on youtube actually doing it. But it does take precise timing. And back when I was practicing enough to get it right I didn't know there were ways to skip it.

Anyways, you'll notice in the gif that when you do a vertical jump you can make Ecco drift left or right some. You need to employ the drifting, but you can't do it from a vertical jump. Swim fast right along the left wall. Then at the last moment turn and do a diagonal jump out of the water and as soon as the jump starts hold left again on the dpad so Ecco drifts a little. That makes him not hit the right corner and you'll land in the next pool. The other ones are tricky, but nowhere near as tough.

I keep popping in Ecco and reminding myself that I'm a casual.

I fucking love this atmosphere and the anxiety, but I seriously can't get past like, 30 minutes of playing. It's really embarrassing.

Yeah it's really hard, plus it doesn't control like any other games so on top of it being just plain difficult you also have to get over the learning curve of an entirely new control scheme. It's way worth it though, at least in my opinion.

>>2039026
Defender of the Future is even harder I would say if only because it's so much easier to get lost. There's little scarier than being stuck drowning in a maze of underwater tunnels.

I've spent hours and hours just jumping and swimming around in Ecco. Sometimes I have painstakingly gone though and perma-killed every enemy in some of the earlier levels like Vents or the Lagoon and then just splashed about for ages.

Another favorite is the Savanna in Jurassic Park Rampage Eiditon. I'd just race back and forth with the raptor as fas as he could run and marvel in all those layers of parallax. Good times, very good times!
