it depends on kind of map you're playing. few examples:
Stronghold and Fortress are the best at snowballing and excel on maps with hard, rich area between players (like on Jebus Cross template).
Necropolis and Inferno are better on huge maps (because of skeleton/demon farming).
Rampart is best town to play on 200% difficulty because of centaurs/elves.

still, i wouldn't call all factions equal in terms of raw power. Inferno, Fortress and Tower seem to have more weak points. Necropolis, Castle and Conflux are almost always a decent choice.
