No, The DXC version of SOTN doesn't come with the Saturn extra areas. However, it does include some cut content from the original japanese PS1 release (2 familiars), it does include Maria as a playable character though, but she plays different than on the Saturn version (she retains her moveset from Rondo).

I think the DXC version of SOTN is the best overall due to said cut content, japanese language and english subtitles.

>People just like to trot it out whenever someone claims that the Saturn is an amazing 2D system as if the fact that a botched port of a good 2D PSX game is supposed to prove that wrong.

It makese sense though because SOTN is originally a PS1 game. Had it been developed specifically for the Saturn hardware it would be better than the PS1 version.

I wish the PSP version of SOTN had included the new area from the Saturn version. It already has Maria boss fight and as playable character (albeit with a different -and better- moveset), and the extra familiars that were taken out of the western SOTN version, if it had the extra Saturn area it would be the definitive version of the game.

But as it stands, I think it's worth playing the Saturn one for the novelty, and also playing it with a Saturn pad makes it automatically satisfying to play.

There is no definitive version, but you can't go wrong with any of them. Even the Saturn which has some performing issues makes it up by adding an entirely new zone and boss (short, but still, nice to have extra places and enemies).

My persona favorite is the PSP version from DXC because it has the familiars missing from the original japanese PS1 version, japanese voice with english subs and the best feature is playable Maria, which differs from the Saturn Maria, in thirs version her moveset is a completely redone moveset based on Rondo of Blood. She's OP as fuck and fast too, pretty fun to speedrun through the game.

By the way, I prefer the new ending theme "serenade of Symphathy" better than I am the Wind. Although I admit I am the Wind has the impact of being a vocal track, but I think the music style doesn't really fit Castlevania. I know some people prefer it because of that, because of the contrast or whatever. But I just think this new track they made fits a lot better and I also really like the composition, as always with Michiru Yamane.
