>VF designs are not too interesting, they are "normal" looking people. It's not bad, just not anything special. Except for a few like Lau and Shun who look great regardless, and Dural who is a lady T-1000.

I feel like with Virtua Fighter, the fighting styles for each character were decided first, and then they would build characters around them. Each character looks appropriate to their fighting styles. Shenmue was originally conceived to be a Virtua Fighter RPG for Akira. Which actually could have made Akira's backstory really fleshed out to the point where you were playing his life day to day in a life simulator. Lau was suppose to be Shun Di, Tom from Shenmue was apparently Jeffry, as Jeffry would have had a hot dog stand close to Akira's residence. Shenmue as Virtua Fighter RPG would have changed the whole tone of the series.
