Would you not be pissed after hauling a 200 lb. meme up a flight of stairs only to have your gaming experience surmounting by the objectively superior RetroArch shaders like webm related?

Yeah. It can be confusing for sure. The documentation for the frontend itself, and the various cores and options could use some work too, but who reads that shit anyway?
For me, the compelling reason for using RA as a frontend is the advantages of the libretro API over stand alone emulators. Lost among the diagonals shitposting is the fact that a single unified API for shaders, input and netplay means that options can be applied globally across all your emulator cores ( or you can pick and choose). I always hated tinkering with shaders to try to find the perfect one, then switching to a different emulator to find that it doesn't work with my preferred shader. When you have a backend renderer like libretro does, you can just apply one shader and be done with it.

The CRT shaders in RetroArch don't perfectly mimic an old TV, but they'll get you 99% of the way there.
