the limitation is the phosphor pitch. you can make color tubes as small as you like but the color resolution will be limited because there's only so close you can get the phosphors. if you look at footage of of the tiny panasonic tubes you can see what i mean. pic related is an up-close of a 5" slot mask tube. i took it because i was interested in a comparison between these small color sets and b/w sets of the same size and big color sets in terms of detail in color and monochrome signals. if anyone's interested i can dump some comparison pictures.
sony made some indextrons which were beam index tubes.
