>great memories playing HL1 with my older brother as a child
>decide to try it again after 20 years
>it's a complete piece of fucking dog shit
why are the voices more muffled than an N64 game and why do all of the characters look like retarded homunculi with little hands that shuffle around awkwardly? how the fuck could anyone actually want to play this piece of shit over Quake or equivelant? holy fuck what a bad game. nostalgia goggles are real.

They're both fine games but I agree, the first Half-Life is all around more fun and cool.

I think the decisions Valve made for Half-Life 2 were all warranted, it was about doing something new, more modern, more cinematic. That this ultimately makes the game less appealing than the first Half-Life is to be expected. The game would've been worse if they tried to keep the approach and sensibility of the first Half-Life with an updated engine. Everything had to feel more grounded and realistic for the game to work properly. Half-Life 2 was lauded and considered as groundbreaking as it was at the time because all the parts add up to a cohesive whole. If the story arch was concluded following the eternally unresolved cliffhanger ending of Episode Two, it would be a great self-contained game.

As it is, the first Half-Life is the better FPS on all fronts, but again, that's kind of to be expected. The first Half-Life was going for making a fun game for a concentrated PC gaming audience. I don't think more of the same with better graphics would have worked. They had to try to do something new, and Half-Life 2 succeeded in this regard.
