Yeah, but I'd say it's better if you already know the antagonist from the previous game, it does alter your experience, and it's not the same watching a YT video or reading about it... at least, not for me.

Having 2 Franklin badges is enough, one for Ninten, one for Paula, if Lloyd/Teddy die, use PK healing omega and revive him. That, along with the magicant hook/Memory chip form EVE make it easy to heal if you're low on HP or PP (go to magicant using the magic hook, heal, go back to mt. itoi using the memory chip).
That said, the enemies on mt. itoi are still brutal, but not impossible.

For being an 8bit RPG, Mother 1 is pretty awesome. Dat huge worldmap (that isn't divided into overworld/towns like most RPGs, its all one big map, that was not an easy task to do back then, a game so big), 8-directional movement instead of the usual 4 (I was always surprised Pokemon didn't got the same 8-directional controls of Mother, since part of the dev team were the same, and basically a lot of technical stuff from Mother can be found in Pokemon too).

As for the game, it's lacking a lot of stuff that made the battle system of M2 or 3 unique (rolling HP meter, rhythm combos in M3, etc), so it's just a Dragon Quest menu-based combat and nothing else, but the game's world, scenario, dialogues and characters are as good as it is expected from Itoi.

I played Mother 1 before playing M2 and 3 and I gotta say I'm glad I did it that way. I got to experience the full trilogy in release order, which is the best thing to do since you get to enjoy the upgrades in gameplay instead of going backwards and feeling its "too dated" (then again, I'm used to 8bit RPGs, so the difficulty and random encounters in m1 wasn't a big deal to me).

Mother IS impressive for a NES game.

People often overlook it, but the giant map that comforms the Mother scenario is actually not common, not even on 16 bit.
RPGs usually have an overworld map, and then towns or dungeons, right? Mother is all 1 big map. Controls are also pretty good actually, being 8-directional when most RPGs at the time were the standard 4-directional controls. I don't know why Pokemon isn't 8-directional since a lot of the staff programmers are the same.

>Even the creator said the last area wasn't in any way balanced out because they just wanted to finally finish the game. Does that make it any better? No.

That's why I added the line about Mt. Itoi.
It's hard, but doesn't break the game. By the time you reach it, you must be near lvl30. You have the magicant hook and the memory chip from EVE, that means, it's a piece of cake: you return to magicant everytime you're about to die, heal up, and return to Mt. itoi using the memory chip. But most people didn't even realize this strategy and keep blaming the game for being "horribly broken and dated". Bleh. Try playing some old Dragon Quest or Megami Tensei and see if Mother is really that hard.
