If you're playing a 1st person title, or a 2D title, it's indeed the best, but for 3rd person 3D stuff, an asymmetrical layout feels better.

Still, it's ideal for 2 use cases and less than ideal in just 1, while asymmetrical controllers are the opposite, and by default it's a better all rounder than anything without analogs, so I agree, OP.

No, it isn't... but it did set the foundation to what would become the peak of video game controllers many years later.
I'm not kidding, even when emulating PS1 and PS2, I can't go back to a more "accurate" controller for those consoles after this.

DualSense is better than any DualShock and I can't recommend it enough for PS1 emulation over a more DualShock like controller.

I like their shape and how it uses a SEGA styled D-Pad at a time when no one else on a mainstream console setting did... but the asymmetrical style messes it up for me with 2D, an analog stick on a secondary position is less uncomfortable than to have the D-Pad on a secondary position to me, so I still prefer the DualShock 4 and DualSense as an all rounder controller, but for 3D XBOX's great.

Also, their battery's way better than both Sony's DualShock 4 and DualSense, so that's a plus too. Anyways, if they made an alternative version of it with a symmetrical layout, it'd be my favorite.
