Don't get me wrong, it all comes down to money, but that's actually precisely my point: Super Mario Bros. was so popular that consumers were bound to sell out its sequel out of store shelves regardless of what the game was like. They weren't worried whether or not people would buy Super Mario Bros. 2 because "Super Mario Bros. 2" was bound to sell well no matter what. They were worried about the impression the original Super Mario Bros 2 would leave consumers, as this would obviously reflect their perception of the Mario series and Nintendo as a whole, thus influencing whether or not they would purchase future Nintendo games and consoles.

This is connected to what they ended up doing--selling and re-branding another game as "Super Mario Bros. 2" was a brilliant marketing strategy. Doki Doki Panic was already a great game, but you can bet it would have sold a fraction of the copies it did end up selling if it wasn't a Mario game with Mario on the cover. They killed two birds with one stone: they got their mileage out of a unique and original side-scroller that on the face of it would have been a hard sell to American consumers due to its bizarre nature, and they also found the perfect game in terms of difficulty and approachability to market to Western consumers who would be OK with something different from the first Super Mario Bros, just not alienating.

I actually like the 2nd one more than 3.
The throwing mechanic is fun, the enemy designs are creative, and it's cool that it was the first Mario game to allow different player characters with unique abilities/characteristics.

Been playing SMB2 on Switch a lot recently. It may be my favorite 2D Mario.

Everyone always talks about the game’s weird history, but I never hear people talking about the game itself.

It’s almost like an evolutionary dead end. Almost every major day platformer has its roots in SMB, but the mechanics from 2 are pretty rare.
