/vr/ - Retro Games

I don't normally play retro stuff but this game has hooked me.
>battle combo system is actually fun unlike boring materia spam system in FFVII
>minigames like the fighting one are fun unlike shitty snowboarding in FFVII
>characters and plot are constantly subversive (e.g expect Ramsus to be typical god-like ruthless villain misusing his power but it turns out he actually is very kind to imprisoned Margie, rightfully treats Shakhan like the worthless puppet he is and the first time you see him in a gear he's getting his shit kicked in by the protag)
>characters all have have subtle hints of personality that aren't tropey or shoved in your face (Fei is kind but naive, Citan is genuinely resourceful and composed, Bart is self-doubting but hotheaded etc.), with believable motives
>plot is complicated with several strands set-up of political discourse not just hurr let's chase Sephiroth because bad, and is way more ambitious in its scope than most games
>good soundtrack
>interesting pathing through the world unlike FFVII which shits the bed after you leave Midgar just going through a dot-to-dot of towns
>sprites look amazing along with the animations unlike FFVII's lego models and stunted animations
It's so good compared to JRPGs released nowadays and much better than FFVII. I wish games released nowadays were as ambitious as this game, but it seems like they've just dumbed down as time has gone on.
