One thing I'll tell you is that it has hard boss fights, which is a stark change of pace from most RPGs I think. Some of those bosses, including the last one, are goddamn vicious bastards. I really liked that aspect of Lunar EB, I felt like I had to work a little for those victories, whereas most of the time especially late in the game bosses stand no chance.
The beginning of the game is pretty punishing overall, but I would suggest you stick with it. Like others have said it's got a lot of charm. Not as much as SSSC I think, but it's certainly engrossing in its own right.
