The console generation numbering system (4th gen, 5th gen, 6th gen, 7th gen, etc.) is a literal invention of Wikipedia editors. They needed a system other than bit count to organize the history of gaming and came up with this, other gaming websites followed suit and adopted this system for themselves.

Before Wikipedia, the Dreamcast was considered the same era as PS1 and N64, but now it’s lumped with PS2/Xbox/GameCube.
