I didn't use the phrase you're quoting but there's clearly a big difference in the way the games play now compared to gen 1 or 2. I've given a list of major changes and linked a video of a prime example of it. You should be able to agree at this point. It's like saying Mario games have been the same thing from Super Mario Bros to Mario Galaxy, or that there's no big difference between Shogun: Total War vs. Warhammer: Total War. They're series that stick to their core design but the features evolve and give a different experience.
