I really like how Seimitsu sticks feel for games, but I think the Sanwa buttons have nicer sensitivity and smoother feel. The button layout in older Sega Astro City has this more comfortable curve to the buttons like this Hori, where I changed out the buttons to blue, but back then the stick placement is too close to the buttons and would be more comfortable spaced away like in more modern layouts. For my specific preferences which cannot be found in the wild, I'd have to custom make such things. Are there any good places to learn and use C&C machines on the cheap?

The Hori Real Arcade Pro 2 works for both PS1 and PS2. It has a very comfortable curve for the buttons, superior for me to the currently accepted Vewlix layout. I would have preferred to get the Hori Real Arcade Pro 2 SE (Special Edition, not Special Addition) but the base 2 was cheap but does require button replacements to not slide around.

Wait, that TE1 is what I have. What is wrong with the TE1?

I too only got the Wii controller because it was really cheap since no one liked the system and retailers were desperate to get rid of them. I didn't think to get any more because I figured I got one for myself and wouldn't want more because it would have been wasteful because I couldn't afford much. However, now I realize the housing and stick are pretty good quality for just $25USD.

I can see, it is sort of like the Cherry MX blues where there are more parts to move. I did add some foam at the bottom of each button and the cheap Madcatz housing probably dampens the sound a bit. My old ears are no longer as sensitive to the Sanwa, but I did start finding Cherry MX blues way more annoying sounding (I still lack the proper descriptive language for the sound profile) than other clicky switches so maybe I'll be more attuned to the sound if I paid more attention.

Consider a HRAP as well. Japanese buttons are much more sensitive and Japanese stick is light for agility to move around.

It is mostly just MDF wood. The difficult to replace part is the clear sheet that was glued onto the face of the controller.

I still have the shipping label from MAS from California. I think he also had an eBay account in those days.

The turbo and slow buttons are a nice touch and don't interfere with regular play. In fact it is useful for some old games which did not autofire and required the player to continually press the buttons rapidly, wearing them out.

I think it looks good. Was so happy to get it for the Saturn back then since I always wanted the same kinds of sticks/buttons for SNES based upon the ads in magazines of the day. If anything, there are plenty of Japanese styled ones which are available now if that's your preference.

I think the best one is a custom made one to your specifications. You can always get some lag free adapters for whatever conversion needs to be made to any console/computer/arcade harness.

Since I get most of my practice on pads, I wish they were. Back then, for any recognition of skill had to be on arcade stick play. Thanks to GGPO I finally was able to shine showing off effective pad play in the Street Fighter games. I remember a friend and I visited an arcade, and the staff on hand was excited to hear we enjoyed playing Guilty Gear, but we got demolished on his break as we were very used to pad play, we really wasted that staffer's break. Fortunately US tournaments made console ports the official determinant factor in game competition which allowed some great pad players to show that they can compete and even beat the best. I'm mediocre to so-so on stick, but my execution skyrockets with control pads, specifically the Sega Saturn pad, but it would not have counted back then, making me sad when I see old videos of play thinking "I could do better than that" but unable to compete with my controller of choice.

The HRAP2 has a Hori-made buttons which are not up to the quality of arcade buttons. They did make some SE/SA editions which did have them at a higher price, but it was up to the person to take the money and effort to replace them. The HRAP2 does not cater to those that may prefer US styled arcade sticks/buttons.

That is the typical button layout of Arcades in the USA back then. All the springs are pretty tight as it has not been used much, Although the buttons are of the Happ variety, they are the ones which are about 1mm higher than typical ones I found on old US arcade machines, but it still feels authentic to me.

The HRAP1 was more like Astro City P2. I do prefer the button layout of Astro City P1 that HRAP2s have. However, I also would rather a Seimitsu stick with the buttons Sanwa but the buttons spaced further apart from the stick like modern sticks.

Japanese arcades are more common to see than old American even in American arcades. It is to be expected. I have been consulting /g/ on what I can do to prevent an expansion card from touching the heatsink/heat pipes and botton solder mins of another card. They have suggested electrician's tape, but I feel it would fall off given the ambient temperature around here with the heat of the components in a case. I am trying to find that plastic they use around power sources (like that of a Saturn or Dreamcast, or Coregrafx bottom) in a big sheet form that I can cut and maybe bend to hook onto the expansion card.

I used to really enjoy using this with MAME back in the day. I prefer Sanwa buttons, but Seimitsu stick. I like the buttons in the Sega Astro City layout (as pictured) but would rather have the stick spaced out further away like like more odern Hori sticks.

That said, I am still a pad player for fighting games. I just use the stick to experience playing the arcade games as they were like but I've never been able to transition well enough for my execution.

You have fairly unique and odd tastes in what would be your ideal controller.

Similar to how I want a Seimitsu LS32 stick paired with Sanwa buttons in a Sega Astro City layout (not the Viewlux everyone uses now) with a wider spacing between stick and buttons like more modern Hori sticks. The closest I got is pic related, but the stick is too close to the buttons (also I couldn't afford a Seimitsu stick, so I kept the Sanwa stick). Just like you, one minor flaw keeps it from perfection.

I would recommend you get your college education in. I earn minimum wage at a very advanced age, and I find games and consoles very expensive. It weighs heavily on me maintaining a roof, utilities, vehicle, and food. I can only play retro games because it's all I had and cannot afford said new games and systems. It is not easy to budget properly, when everything is unsustainable for my income and abilities.

The PS/PS2 to GC adapter is a generic one, was about $10USD from a local game store back in the day. I do not sense may lag, but I've only ever used it for the Gameboy Player.

The PS/PS2 to PS3/PC adapter is the Pelican adapter, which was the first adapter for PS3 back in the day found to have no lag. It was more costly at $20USD back in the day probably due to demand early on in the PS3's life.

I have tried transitioning to stick. I have both, US HAPP styled for my SNES, Japanese Seimitsu and Sanwa for all sorts of systems. Yet I always go back to the d-pad.

I think Madcatz got their poor reputation from their failure to capitalize on the need for good Dreamcast controllers. Everyone back then were clamoring for a worthwhile controller, Madcatz and Performance made ugly awful controllers no one wanted to use, and only Ascii stepped up to the plate with the Fighting Pad FT line.

I never understood how Japanese dual joysticks always seem to have 2P's buttons laid out as if they were sitting at the end of a bench just getting a corner view of the screen, while P1 gets a nice comfortable layout.

I will never be happy with any stock made joystick, because I prefer Seimitsu LS-32 stick, Sanwa OBSF buttons, Sega Astro City button layout (the curve for the heavy attacks Z/C seems more natural to me), and a wider distance between stick and buttons like modern Hori sticks.
