It's pretty fucking hard to beat fixed-camera angles when it comes to atmosphere, which pre-render does naturally. When you control the shot it's so much easier to stage the scene than when the player can look at it from any number of directions. 3d still has a few tricks up it's sleeve that pre-rendered cant do (pic related). I still really really like pre-rendered backgrounds. There's something about 90s rendering that makes it feel more real than modern graphics do today. They're really comfy even in a horror setting.
