-Any Dragon Quest (always default to the remakes even if you have to go non-retro)
-Chrono Cross (ignore the trolls, its still an amazing game on its own and has plenty of ties to Chrono Trigger)
-Suikoden I & II (III as well to finish off the trilogy even though its not retro)
-Mario RPG/Paper Mario
-Final Fantasy V, VI and VIII (in before major debate because those are the ones I like)
-Seiken Densetsu 3 (ARPG)
-Tales of Phantasia (ARPG)
-Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma (ARPGs)
-Zelda 2: Adventure of Link (the ARPG version of Zelda)
-Shadowgate/Crystalis/The Magic of Shaharazade/Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom (older NES RPGs)
-Ys (an entire series spanning a dozen different consoles)
-Legend of the Mystical Ninja (there's one on practically every system)
-Harvest Moon, HM64 (more simulation than RPG, but people are suggesting ARPGs so whatever)
-Phantasy Star (dozens different games, some of which are diablo style online games, PSO1 and 2 are amazing)
-Star Ocean Series (haven't played)
-Shin Megami Tensei/Persona series (haven't played)
-Valkyrie Profile series (never played)
-Neir (never played)
-Ni no Kuni (didn't like, really weak compared to the Level 5 Dragon Quest games)
-White Knight Chronicles (also never played, also Level 5)
-Demon/Dark Souls (Japanese made ARPG that plays more like an old style CRPG)
