Calm down, guys.
Gen 2 is retro and can be posted here.
On /vp/ you will get called a genwunner (or gentwooer, or whatever derogatory term they use for gen2), and even if you get a thread going, people will just post lewd fanart.
/vr/ has civil pokemon threads that always stay on topic (retro) and discuss the actual games.

As the title suggest, they're stadium tournaments, so yeah, there's no "adventure" mode, only battles. There's various cups with various different rules (so it's not just "get your strongest lvl 100 pokemon").
The way I see it, Stadium 1 and 2 are more like additions to the GB games. You can play them stand-alone using rental pokemon, but it will be tough as nails.
The games let you administrate your pokemon and items in a much easier way than doing it on the GB games' interface (for example, you can easily check on a list what TM is what, and if they can be applied to what pokemon or not). It also gives you a lot of extra boxes for storing pokemon on the N64 cart. It's a great way to store all your old pokemon and starting a new file. You can also play the GB game on it, Super Gameboy-style. Eventually you can unlock doduo and dodrio modes, which allow you to use a fastforward feature, great for grinding when training mons.
The stadium is like a post-game content, once you finnish the GB game, you can actually test your skills as a trainer on the cups. They're much harder than any of the battles on the GB game, also fixed the known bugs on the GB game, these moves that didn't work on GB will work on Stadium.
Besides the cups, there's the GYM leader tower, which will let you fight all the 8 leaders from the GB game again, if you can beat them all, you will get a random pokemon as a gift, which can be any of the starters, eevee, the hitmons or the fossils.
Also if you met with certain criteria, you can get special pokemon that can only be obtained on Stadium, such as Pikachu with Surf move (which will let you play a minigame in PKMN Yellow).
The 3D models and animations are great and full of soul.
I have Stadium 2, but I still haven't played it, so I'm talking about Stadium 1, but Stadium 2 is basically the same but with gen 2.
Last but not least, there's mini-games for 4-player VS ala mario party, but without the board game part.

The Stadium games are mandatory if you're planning to replay gen 1 and 2.
They're a great addition, both for managing items/mons while you're playing the GB game, and as post-game stuff by doing the cups.

This.
And do the same with Gold/Silver.
The Stadium games are a huge plus due to being able to use your own pokemon you've trained through the GB game, and use them in strategic battles that are actually challenging.

trying to discuss the Pokemon games (and the retro ones, of all things) with /vp/ is like trying to discuss video games with /v/
