It's not a demake of the original like the western marketing campaign wanted you to think, it's actually a separate game in the series called "Ghost Babel" in Japan.
But it successfully marries the gameplay of the previous 2D Metal Gears with innovation made in the Solid series, and is honestly one of the better titles in the series.

Though not the best in the series and not sanctioned by Kojima, it's still pretty awesome and features some of the best music in the series.

Best to view its setting and story as some of Snake's drunken rants at an Alaskan bar, shortly after a solitary action movie marathon.
