I'm one of the doomest doomers around but I really did love Marathon.
I'll assume you're playing 1, it is less navigable than Doom but it's main focus is it's (awesome) story.

Marathon 2 and Infinity are where it really picks up, especially in regards to scenery but the main character in the game, Durandal is really what keeps things flowing. Cooler enemies and weapons too.

Marathon's fan add ons are really great as well and deserve a look. Easily the most memorable for me is Marathon EVIL, one section has you diving into a gigantic lake to swim down to a crashed spaceship and go inside to fight xenos, great times.

Worst comes to worst, there are walkthroughs around but just go in knowing it's not going to be lightning quick gameplay (still gets fast at times though) and you'll have an easier time dealing with it.
