Been a long while since I played either, but I'll try and give a short answer; MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS:

Less filler fights.
Better story pacing.
Tighter overall storytelling.
No "love triangle"/heroine getting cucked in the ending.
>SF2
Better actual gameplay.
More variety in characters and spells.
Way better music.
Deeper lore exposition including links to SitD.
