Thoughts on the Takara ports of the Fatal Fury games?
I've always been a KOF fan and just now I'm delving into the FF series, and I'm becoming a fan. Surprisingly, the 16-bit ports are all super fun.
Why would I play over the arcade? well, I still play the arcade the most, but the extra modes on the console versions are fun and in some cases, the music is better too.

I played Fatal Fury 2 on Sega so much. It's pretty different to the arcade gameplay-wise but lots of fun.
I also played a lot of the SNES port with a friend because of the Elimination Mode, so fun.
Fatal Fury Special on SNES is also pretty cool and some of the tracks are better than the arcade music IMO (like the Ryo theme)

My old buddy and I have been Fatal Fury fans since we were kids and we still play every now and then when we get together. There's an eternal discussion since we were kids too, he prefers Fatal Fury Special on SNES (which is a fine choice, great port), and doesn't like FF2 because it has some differences and is missing a bunch of characters that Special has, but I insist that 2 is better because I enjoy trolling with Yamada's grab attack, and also the actual reason we end up playing 2 over Special most of the times is the awesome Elimination Mode that's exclusive to FF2 on SNES.
The extra mode in Special is a kinda pointless survival mode for single player, so in that regard 2 wins.

Fatal Fury 2 SNES has my favorite version of Andy's theme.
Also a different arrangement for Dies Irae.

Speaking about console-only modes, I love Elimination mode on FF2 for SNES. You choose all available characters in the game in a custom order, and the 2nd player does the same, then you play until last man standing. It's like a huge tournament of just 2 players. Leaving your best characters for last is a good strategy, but it also depends on if the 2nd player doesn't choose his best character first and wipe out your entire list.

>I don't think I've ever played a single game on that system with shitty sound like your average Genesis title

I actually can't device if this is the better version. I think it's a little more solid and less broken than the Genesis one, the one that feels closer to the original Neo Geo game. But I enjoyed both versions as a kid.

The SNES/MD SNK ports are generally looked down nowdays, since anyone can emulate these games on MAME, but yeah I also think these ports were pretty good.

I played the shit out of FF2/Special on SNES.

I like Fatal Fury 2 on the SNES.

Yamada is broken and fun as fuck to play as in it.
It lacks the sprite resize when characters change planes like in FF Special, but it has some sprite effects that FFS lacks, like Yamada's sandals flying off the screen at the beginning of a match. And also, for an arcade port on the SNES, the game in general has pretty good controls.

I also like the Genesis version for other reasons, the WHOLE game is broken, feels faster/turbo'd, not as accurrate as the SNES port, but still fun.

I also like certain music tracks better on Genesis, and some other better on SNES.
I like that Dies Irae (Krauser's theme) is more similar to the original score instead of the arranged version from the original arcade game.
I also like Andy's theme better on SNES; dat accordion.
Genesis has better sounding pumping tracks like Cheng or Kim ones.

Some backgrounds are also better on Genesis, for example Joe's stage has more detail, while on the SNES there's better background scrolling, most noticeable in Mai's stage.

I mean, none of these ports are as good as the arcade original, but I still enjoy them for different reasons.

This.

FF2 port was a huge step up over the first one.
