The BFG requires that the player kill enemies to replenish ammunition rather than using plasma cells.

From the Codex:
The BFG-9000 will support two firing modes:

Cannon mode will gather energy in the [REDACTED], which can then be released in a single, massively charged Argent pulse. This firing mode is ideal against solitary, powerful targets.

Rapid fire mode releases an accelerated volley of Argent plasmoids. This mode allows for quick aim adjustment and a more efficient use of the [REDACTED].

Plasmoid composition will also be adjustable in the BFG-9000

Spherical composition. The Plasmoids are formed into individual projectiles.

Beam composition. The plasmoids are fired in a solid stream of energy.

Attaching a[REDACTED] to the BFG-9000 will allow the operator to adjust the elemental composition of the weapon's discharge.

Burn composition. This effect adds [REDACTED] gas to the plasmoid dispersion, which invades the targets biological system and continues to deal damage after initial impact.

Arc composition. By mixing [REDACTED] and [REDACTED], the Argent plasmoids are more sensitive to variations in electron charges in the surrounding atmosphere. This will create *leaders* of Argent energy that will jump to nearby targets. This lightning chain of energy can affect multiple targets with one plasmoid.
