Last time I fully replayed through Red, I took Bulbasaur. Pretty fun, I liked getting status moves like Sleep Powder. I took Squirtle as a kid for my first playthrough, still my favorite starter. They're all good like you said though.

For what it's worth, Venusaur is actually the best of the three for high level play with real people.

Yeah, competitive Gen 1 is fun. It's kinda lame how most teams have the same 4 or 5 Pokemon, but there's a surprising amount of variety despite that.
