>The whole point was restoring and updating the original versions of the games.
And they failed because they're still based most heavily on the GBA versions, with only surface-level things rolled back to trick your brain.

>It's a decent collection. Let's not go crazy here.
But it's not even a "collection", it's a loose group of Unity recreations.
>It's far from perfect but it's definitely plenty good enough for 95% of people,
I mean fair enough, they're the most normie-friendly versions. They're not the worst versions of these games out there. Some might even reach a top-three. But none of them are the "best" version.
>The Pixel Remasters are just remasters of the original releases,
They're not even that. They're marketed as that on the surface, but under the hood, they're Frankenteins of previous releases, picking and choosing assets and mechanics from certain versions. The "8-bit" games for example have a lot of carryover from the PSP versions, and even III has a lot more in common with the 3D remake that you'd think.
>Final Fantasy 1: Dawn of Souls for the GBA
Only if you can't into the magic system.
>Final Fantasy 2: Dawn of Souls for the GBA or Pixel Remaster
I can see that, but I feel later releases lose some of the uniqueness the game had.
>Final Fantasy 3: Pixel Remaster
See me after class.
>Final Fantasy 4: PSP
Meh, ONLY if you're curious enough to play The After Years and have no access to the WiiWare version, or you really, really want to try Interlude (why?).
>Final Fantasy 5: GBA or Pixel Remaster
I would if I didn't loathe the Advance localization with a passion.
>Final Fantasy 6: ... The best version of this that I know of the SNES version with the Woolsey patch...
>>9835996
SNES has a GBA script port which renders every other text hack obsolete, and the patch you mentioned is the hack equivalent of the guy in comments sections that goes "first!" and having inexplicable likes despite this person not offering anything to the world.
>>9834984
Maybe one day when someone realizes that the Japanese, non-International original is super obscure in the Western sphere.
>>9835048
I agree, Pixel Remaster weirdly takes too much from the 3D remake and slips it in 2D skin.

>saturated wash like everything GBA-onwards despite the screen no longer calling for it
>hodgepodge of GBA assets and redrawn/reshaded NES-style graphics leading to weird lack of artistic cohesion
>Pixel Remasters themselves all run in the same Unity engine and share more assets and effects with each other than the original games ever did, making them feel more samey than ever

As a whole? No. The closest to deing "definitive" is FFIII since its WonderSwan remake was abruptly canceled, and that one had a bunch of under-the-hood changes that make it a weird amalgamation of Famicom & DS. That said, it's rumored that VI is getting the most effort, but we'll see.

They're unironically still the optimal versions, I'm still made those RHDN fags didn't finish the fan-translations for once due to Origins coming out.

They used saturated GBA sprites for most of the tilesets and backgrounds in general, and for the translation too for that matter, so FFIV for example doesn't have the updated PSP script that combines text from the GBA and DS/3D versions.

Yeah, only FFIII really needed a 2D remake, but at the same time, Pixel Remaster is just okay if you're a JRPG-normie trying to get into classic Final Fantasy.

Yep. A lot of things like the white magic-mitigating GBA/PSP healing items are still in the game, you can see where fixed monster tiles are, etc. FFI&II are a weird hodge-podge of previous remakes, and in the case of FFI in particular, the best version is still pre-GBA. They even messed up the redone sprites - look at Lich or Gargoyle's asymmetrical eyes, or how things like Astos and Chaos are more faithful in the PSP version, or how the basic overworld/background tilesets are STILL based on the oversaturated GBA version (clashing with the revised sprites).
>>8215323
Only FFIII is worthwhile, and even then, you can make the argument that the original is best if you want a preserved difficulty. Call us when the modding scene gets serious.

>Have the Pixel Remasters been the best versions, with the font mod?
The Pixel Remasters have amazing potential with future mods (they're made in Unity too), but the vanilla versions are squandered by typical Square Enix idiocy. On the surface, the marketing for them seems sound, but digging a little deeper, they have a fair amount of unsavory stuff carried over from the later remakes like the FFI healing items making White Magic less valuable. I'd at least wait until the mod scene starts to flourish.
>>8196064
The new Final Fantasy III actually has several things borrowed from the DS version like tweaked class abilities/stats and restoring the unused enemy encounters, but it's still arguably the best Pixel Remaster so far (if only on a technicality due to the cancelation of the WonderSwan Color remake); even if it for the most part skews a little on the easy side, it at least resembles the original game feel.

The only decent Pixel Remaster so far has been Final Fantasy III, by virtue of not having any other good re-releases; I, II, and even IV have been outdone before.

hairy_hen is a chick. It's literally in her name.
Look, it's probably the best of an autistic lot, but for what it's worth, BOTH T-Edition translations (the LUA version and the upcoming hardcoded patch by Tomato himself, whom hairy_hen closely based her work on) are based heavily on Slattery's GBA script.

Speaking about the first two Pixel Remasters (have not yet tried the fourth): they aren't really the return to form they've been marketed as. Not just in terms of gameplay mechanics, but also graphically. It's a very weird, not-at-all-cohesive hodge-podge of previous versions in a blender. Most of the overworld and background assets are dated from the WSC style, but they're the worst thing to happen that those original assets since the darkened/stretched PSX versions because they're based on the GBA versions that saturate all the colors and details to ridiculous levels (even the PSP versions were based on GBA palette for no good reason). On top of that, the newer sprites were clearly made without this in mind (obviously, since they seem to have first been made for an art book years ago) and so they feel out of place and overall don't feel like they belong in these environments. The monster sprites are a weird mix of sometimes-recolored GBA sprites and new ones based on the NES sprites, but the latter's quality is all over the place: just look at Lich and Gargoyle's eye, final Emperor's face, or Dullahan's head. In some cases, the PSP versions are closer to the NES poses, such as Astos and Chaos. And in other cases, the Pixel Remaster is missing the point (see pic). Final Fantasy III suffers the least due to there being no other finished 2D remake and the 8-bit monster sprites being good enough to have shading drawn over them, but the first two really set the expectations for the rest of the lineup, so the bottom line is this: calling them "Pixel Remasters" is a sham.
