It might be now. At the time I didn't care for it and never really got into it the way I did 1 and 2. Then I discovered KoF a couple years later and that was that. Though I did play a good deal of MK9 when it came out (partially due to KoFXIII being shit) and an embarrassing amount if Injustice.

Watching high level MK3 play is kinda fun but I don't have a ton of interest in it.

If you just want something accessible then play Mortal Kombat. It was designed to be very easy to learn.

Otherwise just pick one you like and spend the time learning it. Starting with SF2 if it's not the game you plan to play the most won't help a ton.
